    Question about Avatars

    Hi there!

We are finishing a new game, Pirate Mayhem, and we were thinking about offering the option to replace the main character with the player’s avatar.

We have read all we could find about Avatars but we are not sure yet if we can use them in our game.

The game is a shooter like the old arcades, Cabal or Blood Bros, and the main character shoots 3D cartoon pirates and there is no blood. You can see a screenshot here:

We would need to add a gun to the avatar too.

So as the game is cartoon style, we are wondering if we are allowed to use avatars. What do you think?

    rules are quite straightforward:

    • The user cannot interact with his own avatar as it was a third party character
    • Cloathing cannot be changed
    • Proportions cannot be modified
    • The user's avatar cannot talk

So adding a weapon it's ok if it's not used in actual violence but cartoon like only. That's my understanding of the present rules.

From what you're describing I don't believe that would violate any of the avatar rules, but we'd have to see it in action to be sure. Since it's cartoon violence and the avatar isn't spurting blood, based on those screens it looks like it would be fine.

Thanks! It's what we thought but we wanted to make it sure before we start working on the feature.

Here is a trailer of the Flash version of the game, if it helps:
